The Common Waxbill is an invasive species in Spain. They can be seen in small colonies living in the wild, as the climate here is ideal for them. Originally the are from sub-Saharan Africa. Our Common Waxbills were obtained through someone who caught them in the wild in Spain. They now have a happy live in our aviaries and are not bothering the original wildlife. A much better solution than what the authorities suggest for other flocks of escaped birds, like in Madrid, Seville or Barcelona where they simply want to cull them, although I realise that is a controversial issue which has no easy solution on such a large scale.
Like these little birds do in the wild, they also live in little groups together in the aviary. You will almost always find them together, doing the same thing at the same time, be it sleeping, feeding or bathing.
