BIRDING TRIP: Lagoons of El Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain

At this time of year, a lot of lakes and lagoons in the south of Spain are completely dry. So it was not a surprise to find that also the three lagoons in El Puerto de Santa Maria were in this state. Laguna Chica, Juncosa and Salada were all completely without any water. So obviously not a lot of wader birds to observe, but I was fortunate enough to see two Western Marsh Harriers, flying relatively low while hunting for food.

Also present were a lot of Wood Pigeons. I managed to capture one that had a very relaxing appearance. I'm sure it wasn't aware of the Harriers' presence.

Just as I was leaving, I noticed some activity in a bush near the road and realised I was watching a European Pied Flycatcher, at less than three metres away from the car. It let me take photos through the open window while it sat on some branches and stared at me in a surprised way, not being scared at all.

Before arriving at the lagoons, I had taken some photos of a bird sitting on a fence and it wasn't until I had a closer look at home that I found out I had seen a Eurasian Wryneck, a type of Woodpecker. What an amazing bird!

I didn't have high expectations before setting off to this spot, but in the end I was lucky enough to see two new species and a few birds of prey. It's amazing how birds can surprise you at any time!
