BOOK REVIEW: De wereld van onze vogels

In this book more than a hundred different bird species are described. Birds that can be found in Germany, Holland and Belgium, but also in other parts of Europe.

This book does not provide detailed data about every species, but tells some remarkable facts about the birds. It is nice to have an overview of the most common species that you usually find out there in the field when you a are a regular birdwatcher.

The photos in this book were taken by Rosl Rössner and are of exceptional quality. It is a pleasure to browse through this book, even without reading the short texts.

Along with lot of species in this book, there is a description of the birds calls or songs, which is in my opinion something rather useless, because it is nearly impossible to describe them using the human alphabet. Some books solve this problem by adding a QR-code to a website where you can hear the exact sounds.

This Dutch version of the book is a translation of the original version which was released in German, called 'Unsere Vogelwelt' 9783440142233 and unfortunately quite often the translation is a bit on the poor side.

A rare example of an unfortunate placement of a photo on two pages

Overall, despite a few negative points, I would say this book has its place in any decent collection, mostly because of the great photos.

What I liked about it:

+  Very beautiful photography
+  Nice layout

What I didn't like about it:

-  Sometimes poor translation
-  Too much attention on bird sounds
