BIRDING TRIP: Valle del Infierno, Los Barrios, Spain

After completing this trail I remembered that the best time to go birdwatching is early in the morning on a day during the week if you want to avoid being bothered by other people. A group of horse riders, motor bikers, yelling kids, cars... they were there all the time today. But maybe it was partly my fault for not setting off earlier. But hey, who cares... today was my first ever encounter with a Common Firecrest, the smallest bird in Europe! And I even managed to photograph it! It only measures 9 cm.

Also a lot of Griffon Vultures present today, but very high in the sky and therefore a bit difficult to photograph.

The first part of this easy-to-follow trail is very open. For the second part you follow a path through an area with a lot of old trees along a small stream. There is a lot of shade which makes it a suitable walk even on hot summer days. This trail which is called Valle del Infierno (Valley of Hell) got its name either after the impenetrable vegetation or by a bloody battle fought between the Christians and Muslims a long time ago.

Again, there were plenty of beautiful butterflies. I would say they were easier to photograph than the birds in this place.

Wall Brown (lasiommata megera)

The whole walk is about 5 kms. Highly recommended if you like beautiful, relaxing surroundings and you want to fill your lungs with fresh air, but if your main purpose is bird observation then you have to pick the perfect moment, which is clearly not on a sunny Saturday autumn afternoon.
