BIRDING TRIP: Laguna de Medina, Jerez de la Frontera, Spain

The last day of 2021 was a beautiful one! It even seemed spring with temperatures well above 20 degrees and the sun shining all the time with no wind at all. I paid a visit to the Medina lagoon to see if there was any water after months of drought. There had been several days of abundant rainfall and even floods in some parts, so I expected to see at least some water in the lagoon.

Sardinian Warbler

Much to my relief, my prediction was right. I'd say more than half of the lagoon was filled with water. As it was a nearly windless day with a clear blue sky, there were some beautiful reflections in the water.

There were only a few wader birds: I counted 22 Black-winged Stilt. The largest group by far was a huge flock of Black-headed Gulls, without any doubt the biggest colony I have ever seen, easily over 1,000 birds strong.

An impressive number of Black-headed Gulls

I identified 25 different species. Most remarkable were Spanish Sparrow, Stone-curlew and Sparrowhawk.

Eurasian Sparrowhawk

Great Egret

Common Chiffchaff

As usual, plenty of birds in this magnificent place, where I enjoyed the weather today almost as much as the birds.
