Red-knobbed Coot photo shoot

Although globally classified as LC (Least Concern), the Red-knobbed Coot is in danger of extinction in Spain. There aren't that many sightings and decent photographs are also scarce. As a matter of fact, it was my very first encounter with this delicate species. In order to get close enough, I stayed unnoticed all the time, hiding in the reeds wearing my camouflage suit.

There was only one individual, and it was confidently swimming amongst other Coots and ducks. The only visual difference with the very common Eurasian Coot is the pair of reddish horns, which turn crimson red in the breeding season.

Especially for the low-angle shots, I had to lie down in a very uncomfortable position, with my elbows leaning on hard, sharp rocks.
