Red-cheeked Cordonbleu

Male Red-cheeked Cordonbleu

Truly amazing birds with unusual blue plumage. Although they are small (12 cm) and original from Africa, they have proved to be strong birds in our outdoor aviaries. We provide them with some extra heat in winter using heat bulbs, just in case. They will not attack other birds in a mixed aviary, but despite their small size, they are very brave and will even try to make larger birds go off their favourite perch. They will happily take mealworms, even when those are offered by hand through the maze. That's because they have got used to their caretakers after so long. We have not been able to breed them yet.

When they are getting into breeding condition, the males jump up and down on a perch holding a twig or some coconut fibre in their beak, a really interesting sight.
