BOOK REVIEW: Bird Photographer of the Year 3

This was the first book in the Bird Photographer of the Year series that we added to our collection. Bird Photographer of the Year is the leading bird photography competition, celebrating the world's best bird photography while supporting conservation efforts through imagery and financial support.

The advent of digital technology has revolutionised photography in recent years, and this book brings to life some of the most stunning bird photography currently on offer. It features a vast variety of photographs by hardened pros, keen amateurs and hobbyists alike, reflecting the huge diversity of bird enthusiasts and nature lovers which is so important in ensuring their conservation and survival.

Of course the main contents of this book are photos, but you will also spend quite a while reading the accompanying text in which the photographer usually explains how they took the photo and which gear and settings were used.

The book has a nice large format and is printed on excellent quality paper. You will happily browse through the book several times, because the photos are really amazing and inspiring. The featured categories in the book are:

  • Best Portrait
  • Birds in the Environment
  • Attention to Detail
  • Bird Behaviour
  • Birds in Flight
  • Garden and Urban Birds
  • Creative Imagery
As I said before, the photos are of exceptional quality, but the Creative Imagery category contains some weird entries which in my opinion often lack quality and have very little to do with bird photography.

Overall a highly recommended book if you are into bird observation or bird photography. It will take a lot of practice and patience to achieve the same level of the imagery in this book, but one day Henry will send in one of his photographs. This was the first book in this series that we purchased, but definitely
 not the last one.

What I liked about it:

+  Some truly amazing photographs
+  Good paper and finishing quality

What I didn't like about it:

-  Some of the photos in the Artistic Category could have been omitted
