Years ago, Laguna de Torrox lay completely dry, contaminated, and devoid of life. However, recent efforts have revived the area through the restoration of the artificial lakes and the introduction of water pumping. This lagoon is divided into two sectors, comprising a large artificial wetland. Each sector includes an island, which serves as a resting place for numerous Great Cormorants, Grey Herons, and some domestic Greylag Geese.

The western sector stands out as the superior location, offering opportunities to spot Common Pochard, Red-crested Pochard, Spoonbill and occasionally, the elusive White-headed Duck on the open water. It's important to note that the urban nature of this wetland and the presence of carp may affect the presence of White-headed Duck.
For birdwatching enthusiasts, it's recommended to explore the shallower areas and reeds where you may encounter Common Kingfishers, Squacco Herons, Black-crowned Night Herons, Spoonbills, Purple Herons during the summer months, Purple Swamphens, and Little Bitterns. The point where both sectors converge is particularly promising for observing the latter two species.

Don't forget to scan the shore vegetation, which may reveal Reed Warblers, Common Waxbills, Cetti's Warblers and Bluethroats (an excellent location for the latter, especially in February-March). Additionally, keep an eye on the open areas for various pipit species. Red-legged Partridges and a variety of raptors are also possibilities, thanks to the nearby agricultural fields.
This is definitely one of our favourite birding places in the province of Cadiz. There is always plenty of space to park, a lot of different species to observe and the track is in mint condition.
