BIRDING TRIP: Torrox Lagoon, Jerez de la Frontera, Spain

Hoping to get the chance to photograph the Great Crested Grebe, I arrived just after sunrise at around 7:45 AM at this place that Celia frequents to go running. It was her who had seen this species a few days earlier. I ended up observing 36 different species.

I observed various types of egrets and herons. The one I most delighted to see was the Black-crowned Night Heron. I saw three of them, one juvenile and two adults, standing together on a rock in the middle of the lagoon, beside a Grey Heron.

While I was sitting on the riverbank to take a few shots of dragonflies I saw a blue flash flying over the water. A Kingfisher! I was quick enough to capture a few images before it perched in a tree next to the water. Just before I finished my walk I saw two more Kingfishers flying together over the grass. Because there was quite some distance between the two places, I assume they were three birds in total.

At least I could identify this one as a female
