BIRDING TRIP: Torrox Lagoon, Jerez de La Frontera, Spain

In between a couple of rainy days, I thought yesterday was a great time to go the the Torrox Lagoon in search of a few species that had been reported recently to add to my life list. I was lucky to spot a few Red-crested Pochards.

White-cheeked Pintail

I was hoping to spot a Red-knobbed Coot, but didn't see any. Instead I counted a great total of 39 different other species. Among them a few birds of prey migrating back from Africa.

After the last days' rainfall the level of the lagoon had clearly risen. I noticed a spectacular number of Carps swimming near the place where people feed the ducks. It remains to be seen if this invasive species will have a devastating effect on the lagoon, similarly to the situation in the Medina Lagoon, where they all seem to have disappeared now due to the drought of last summer.

Literally a ton of Carps

Looking forward to going back to this place soon. Spring is just around the corner!
